System being deployed to monitor radiation around Belarusian nuclear power plant

MINSK, 21 July (BelTA) – A system to monitor the radiation situation around the Belarusian nuclear power plant is being deployed. The information was released by Anna Kiyevitskaya, Deputy Head of the Radiation and Environmental Monitoring Service of the state enterprise National Center for Hydrometeorology, Radioactive Pollution Control, and Environmental Monitoring, on 21 July, BelTA has learned.

According to the source, an automated system to monitor radiation status has already been deployed. The system comprises ten automatic sensors.

At present weather conditions around the Belarusian nuclear power plant are monitored as well as chemical pollution in soil and surface waters. “These measurements are taken for the sake of monitoring the operation of the future nuclear power plant,” noted Anna Kiyevitskaya.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is a project to build an AES-2006 type nuclear power plant 18km away from Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The BelNPP will have two power-generating units with the total output capacity of up to 2,400MW (2x1,200MW). In line with the general contract for building the nuclear power plant the first power-generating unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2018, with the second one to go online in 2020.
