Rapota: Politicians' main duty is to avoid war

MINSK, 28 April (BelTA) – The main duty of politicians is to avoid placing people into inhuman military conditions, State Secretary of the Union State Grigory Rapota said at the international forum Great Victory Through Unity in Minsk on 28 April, BelTA has learned.

Grigory Rapota expressed his respect to war veterans and fallen heroes who borne the burden of the Great Patriotic War on their shoulders. In his words, the victory in the war is the people's victory that illustrates military glory and self-sacrifice. “The war places a person into inhuman conditions. The Bible's moral Do Not Murder does not work in the war. If you do not kill your enemy, he kills you. It is a philosophic issue. The main thing for politicians, however, is to avoid war,” State Secretary of the Union State said.

In his words, during the Great Patriotic War the multinational Soviet Army faced a tragic need to kill their enemy for the sake of saving the Motherland. “When we tell that it is hard to remain human in inhuman conditions, we especially appreciate the display of dignity and honor,” said Grigory Rapota. He cited as an example the story of a Soviet soldier, a Belarusian national. Senior Sergeant Trifon Lukyanovich who served at the front in 1941-1945, sacrificed his life to save a German girl from the impending death. “Trifon Lukyanovich's deed gave an inspiration to sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich for the creation of a composition which later was erected in Berlin's Treptower Park,” said the State Secretary.

“It is a display of chivalry in inhuman conditions. The question is should people be placed into such conditions. One should think ten times before grabbing weapons,” Grigory Rapota stressed.

The international forum Great Victory Through Unity is taking place in Minsk on 27-29 April. Partaking in the forum are war veterans, representatives of the Union State authorities, government bodies of the CIS member states, experts and scientists, mass media, leaders of youth organizations from the CIS and Baltic countries, Georgia.

The forum is organized by the politological center North-South and the development fund Institute of Eurasian Studies under the auspices of the CIS Interstate Fund for Humanitarian Cooperation and the Russian organization Knowledge. The main objective of the event is to preserve the memory about the victory in the Great Patriotic War as the most important historical event uniting the peoples of the former Soviet Union.
