Plans to launch 4G in all Belarusian towns with 50,000+ population

MINSK, 16 May (BelTA) - The 4G network will become available in all Belarusian towns with the population of more than 50,000 within the next two years, Head of Telecommunications Department of the Belarusian Communications and Informatization Ministry Olga Fedoreyeva said during the Belarus Internet Governance Forum (IGF) 2017 on 16 May, BelTA has learned.

“We plan to extend the 4G mobile telecom technology to all Belarusian towns with more than 50,000 inhabitants within two years. When the 5G technology is standardized worldwide, Belarus will start implementing it, too. I hope that within a five-year period the 5G service will be launched in Belarus,” Olga Fedoreyeva noted.

In the years to come the Belarusian Communications Ministry will focus on the development of national information and communication infrastructure applying cloud technologies, implementation of new electronic services and modernization of the existing ones, and increasing the share of IT in Belarus' GDP.

The IGF Belarus 2017 has received over 400 applications for participation from Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Georgia, Netherlands, and Canada. They were submitted by representatives of business communities, non-profit organizations, telecom service providers, and universities. The participants of the forum discuss such topics as electronic government, personal data protection, internet safety, infrastructure of open data in Belarus, and regional issues of the development of the Internet.

The forum is organized by the technical administrator of Belarus' domain extensions .BY and .БЕЛ hoster.by, the Operational and Analytical Center under the President of Belarus, the non-profit law enforcement organization Human Constanta. The event is powered by ICANN and RIPE NCC.
