MINSK, 18 February (BelTA) – Fifth-year students of the Energy Department of the Belarusian National Technical University are going through undergraduate training at the Smolensk nuclear power plant, BelTA learned from the Information and Public Relations Department of the Smolensk nuclear power plant.
It is the third group of students from Belarus, who specialize in nuclear energy installations and are getting familiar with the operation of the Russian nuclear power plant in order to develop their country's nuclear energy industry and operate the Belarusian nuclear power plant in the future.
As part of undergraduate training the Belarusian students are expected to study fundamental systems of the nuclear power plant, the composition of the central department, technical parameters and peculiarities in the operation of the main equipment and auxiliary equipment, general aspects of the operation of nuclear power plants, nuclear industry rules and standards.
Apart from theoretical studies the Belarusian students went on a tour of the first power-generating unit of the Smolensk nuclear power plant. They visited the turbine room and the reactor room, the room where the main circulating pumps are where they got an overview of the technological equipment and systems and made sure of the high safety standards of the nuclear power plant.
Supervisors assigned by the Smolensk nuclear power plant mentioned the high level of education of the Belarusian students and their dedication to learning new things about peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
The Belarusian nuclear power plant is a project to build an AES-2006 type nuclear power plant 18km away from Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The BelNPP will have two power-generating units with the total output capacity of up to 2,400MW (2x1,200MW). In line with the general contract for building the nuclear power plant the first power-generating unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2018, with the second one to go online in 2020.
The Smolensk nuclear power plant is a branch of OAO Rosenergoatom. Every year the power plant generates about 20 billion kWh of electricity on the average or about 13% of Rosenergoatom's output and over 80% of Smolensk Oblast's output.
