OSTROVETS, 20 April (BelTA) - Belarus is taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of the nuclear power plant that is being built in Ostrovets, Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk told the media on 20 April, BelTA has learned.
“All the necessary measures are undertaken to secure the plant's safety. All the requirements in part of the construction, inspection and assembling of technological equipment are met in full. The safety of the Belarusian nuclear power plant is our number one priority,” Mikhail Mikhadyuk stressed.
According to the deputy minister, Belarus provides full information on the progress in the nuclear power plant project. An information center of the Belarusian nuclear power plant was opened in Ostrovets. More than 13,000 people have visited the center since it was opened. The center houses a permanent exhibition on the peaceful uses of atomic energy.
The Belarusian nuclear power plant is built using the AES-2006 nuclear power plant design that features VVER-1200 type reactors. The construction site is located 18km away from Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The power plant will have two power-generating units with the total output capacity of up to 2,400MW (2x1,200MW). The first unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2019, with the second one to go online in 2020.
