MINSK, 27 July (BelTA) – Experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are working in Belarus to prepare a mission that will assess the construction site of the nuclear power plant, representatives of the Belarusian Energy Ministry told BelTA.
The source said that the IAEA experts are working for the sake of jointly evaluating preparations for the forthcoming IAEA mission that will evaluate the Site and External Events Design (SEED) in accordance with the request Belarus made previously. As a result of the current visit the sides will come up with technical specifications for arranging the SEED mission.
The Belarusian nuclear power plant is a project to build an AES-2006 type nuclear power plant 18km away from Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The BelNPP will have two power-generating units with the total output capacity of up to 2,400MW (2x1,200MW). In line with the general contract for building the nuclear power plant the first power-generating unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2018, with the second one to go online in 2020.
