IAEA: Development of nuclear energy should be based on highest safety standards

MOSCOW, 30 May (BelTA) - The development of nuclear energy should be based on the highest safety standards, IAEA Deputy Director General Mikhail Chudakov today at the opening of the eighth international forum Atomexpo in Moscow, BelTA has learned.

“An increasing number of developing countries include nuclear energy into their energy policy, and it should be remembered that development of nuclear energy should be based on the highest safety standards and strict criteria for the operation of nuclear power plants. It is very important to create a solid infrastructure for the safe operation of a nuclear power plant, and this is what the IAEA does by ensuring reliable and stable operation of the nuclear industry. We believe in the peaceful atom. We believe in the future development of nuclear energy and will do our best to make it evolve in a safe direction,” IAEA Deputy Director said.

Mikhail Chudakov noted that Russia, which is the organizer of Atomexpo, is a major player in the global nuclear industry. The country operates over 400 nuclear reactors. Another 65 are under construction. In his opinion, Russia successfully passes the experience in the construction and operation of nuclear power plants to many countries, and this is particularly important, since in view of the growing global population and global warming, nuclear energy is beginning to play an increasingly important role.

The International Forum Atomexpo is running in Moscow on 30 May-1 June. The main theme of the forum this year is Nuclear Power as the Basis of Carbonless Energy Mix.

Atomexpo is an exhibition and business platform for meetings and negotiations of world nuclear power leaders. The forum includes an international exhibition and a congress featuring representatives of international, state and public organizations, Russian and foreign companies, leading experts in the nuclear power industry. The exposition stand of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant displays video and photo materials telling about the history of the BelNPP construction project, and also the information on the progress made in 2015 and goals for 2016.

One of the key events of the forum will be a plenary session The Future of Nuclear Energy. New Players. It will review the development of the international nuclear power industry, cooperation with countries that are planning to develop nuclear energy and the main aspects of Rosatom's integrated offer. New players are countries with no experience in the use of nuclear technologies whose entrance into the ranks of nuclear power countries may be a catalyst for their high-tech development and will have an influence on the future of nuclear power generation.

The organizer of the event is State Corporation Rosatom, operator – OOO Atomexpo.
