GRODNO, 13 June (BelTA) – A buried treasure was discovered in Grodno in April. According to experts, it is estimated at a total of nearly $20,000, reports the website of the Grodnenskaya Pravda newspaper.
The treasure was unearthed during construction works in an old building on 14 April. A box with dozens of gold coins and jewelry was discovered by one of the construction workers.
The culture department of the Grodno Oblast Executive Committee noted that each item of the treasure was assessed separately. The most valuable of them was a signet ring of a graduate of the Page Corps. It was estimated at $1,500.
All the evaluation findings were submitted to the Grodno Oblast Council for Historical and Cultural Heritage. If the treasure gets the status of a historical and cultural property, the construction workers and the building owner can claim compensation that equals half of the cost of the buried treasure.
At present all the items are held at the Grodno State Museum of History and Archeology. After all the formalities are settled, they will be put on display in one of the exposition halls of the New Castle.
