Belarus concerned about desecration of Soviet war graves in Poland

MINSK, 17 December (BelTA) – The Embassies of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia in Poland have adopted a joint statement to voice their concerns regarding frequent reports on the desecration of the Soviet war graves in Poland. The cemetery commemorates Soviet soldiers who died liberating the country from the Nazis in 1944-1945. The reports also mention damages made to monuments erected to honor Soviet soldiers as well as the destruction of such monuments on the decision of the local authorities. The relevant statement has been published on the website of the Belarusian embassy in Poland, BelTA informs.

“The citizens of our states are profoundly distressed with what has been happening to the memory of hundreds of thousands of their fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers who gave their lives for the freedom of Poland and its people,” the statement runs.

The Embassies of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia in Poland also call upon the Polish authorities to make a statement that the memory of the Soviet soldiers who perished in the fight to liberate Poland and died in the Hitler's camps on the territory of Poland deserve due respect. “Their graves and monuments erected to commemorate them are sacred. Those guilty in their desecration or unauthorized destruction should be brought to responsibility in line with the legislation of the Republic of Poland,” the statement of the four countries says.
