Lukashenko: U.S. desire to sustain global leadership undermines security in Europe

MINSK, 30 October (BelTA) - The desire of the United States and its allies to sustain their leading role in the modern world remains a source the main destabilizing influence on security in Europe, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said during the conference for Belarusian army officers on 30 October, BelTA has learned.

"It is in this context that we should consider the escalating militarization of the region. Examples of this are the deployment of the NATO command centers in the Baltic countries and Poland, military build-up, including the American nuclear weapons in European countries,” the head of state said. According to the President, the political leaders of these countries seek to capitalize on the imaginary threat from the East to receive dividends in the form of the deployment of additional NATO troops, and also assistance in the modernization of the existing military infrastructure facilities and creating new ones. "This is why it is very important to see the Ukrainian direction because in the West and North-West we have enough problems," Alexander Lukashenko underlined.

He noted that such activity of the United States to enhance its military capabilities violates the existing balance of power in the region. "This has a negative impact on the U.S.-Russian relations and is also a source of military threat for Belarus,” said the Belarusian head of state.
