MINSK, 28 February (BelTA) – It is needed to consider the prospects of building a new center for the transplantation of organs and tissues in Belarus, President Alexander Lukashenko gave a corresponding instruction during the visit to the National Research Center for Organ and Tissue Transplantation at Minsk City Hospital No. 9 on 28 February, BelTA has learned.
“It is needed to analyze the cost of building an ultramodern center,” the head of state said.
The President got familiar with new medical technologies used in the center, toured the intensive care and transplantation departments, the cell technologies lab. The head of state also talked to the patients, including children, presented souvenirs to them, wished them health and every success.
Head of the National Research Center for Organ and Tissue Transplantation Oleg Rummo informed Alexander Lukashenko about the development prospects of transplantation in Belarus, the ongoing renovation and restructuring of the bed capacity. For example, the construction of a cardio unit and the creation of the Minsk city center of cardiovascular surgery there is one of the areas of focus.
The center is involved in the development and promotion of new technologies, training of aspiring doctors. The center also cooperates with foreign partners. There are transplantation departments in virtually all oblast capitals of Belarus. Nevertheless, the National Research Center for Organ and Tissue Transplantation in Minsk operates at full capacity, its services are in demand in the country and abroad. In 2010, the number of foreign patients went up more than 5 times, the export of medical services increased 25 times.
The opening of the National Research Center for Organ and Tissue Transplantation helped increase the number of organ transplantations in Belarus. The number of these surgeries went up more than 60 times (from eight to 502 surgeries) in comparison with 2005. The center introduces cutting-edge scientific achievements in the organ transplantation for children and adults. Specialists of the center have devised brand-new methods, algorithms, and technologies. All that will help patients get back to normal life. “Our inventions are recognized both in Belarus and abroad,” Oleg Rummo stressed.
Belarus is the CIS leader as far as the number of transplantations in concerned. In 2016, the country was placed 10th in the world in terms of the organ donation development ahead of such countries as Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, Poland, and South Korea.
The work to develop and apply organ transplantation technologies in the treatment of children and adults in 2016 was nominated for the Belarusian State Prize in Science and Technology.
