Lukashenko speaks about main task of President during elections

MINSK, 30 August (BelTA) – On 30 August, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko met with the heads of the OSCE election observation mission in Belarus. During the meeting, the Belarusian leader talked about the main task of the President during the election campaign, BelTA has learned.

“Ensuring security, fairness and integrity is the main task of the President. I will do everything to make sure that the elections are held in this way and that after the elections our country remains as open, clean, fair and safe as it is now,” the head of state noted.

Alexander Lukashenko stressed that his role in the electoral process as President is to ensure clear and strict compliance with the laws and the entire electoral legislation of Belarus in accordance with the Constitution. “These are my responsibilities. I must do everything so that the voting process is fair, open, safe and secure, so that people come to the polls as if it is a holiday,” the Belarusian leader noted.

The meeting was attended by Special Coordinator of the OSCE short-term observer mission, Vice President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Kent Harstedt and Head of the OSCE/ODIHR Election Observation Mission Cayetana De Zulueta Owtram.

The Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) is the OSCE institution assisting its member states in the implementation of their humanitarian commitments to the Organization.

The elections to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus are due to take place on 11 September.
