Lukashenko: Belarus' law enforcement system should be most effective

MINSK, 10 March (BelTA) – The Belarusian law enforcement system should be as effective as possible, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said at the government's meeting held on 10 March to consider the performance of the law enforcement bodies in 2016 and ways to optimize the country's law enforcement and judicial systems, BelTA has learned.

“The lack of development momentum in the law enforcement sector inevitably leads to lagging and stagnation. To make progress we should regularly analyze the existing defects in the sector and remove them promptly. Requirements to the country's law enforcement system will be getting tougher. This is an open secret. It should be as effective and optimal as possible. The law enforcement sector cannot stay aside from the processes taking place in the country in general,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

At the same time, the president stressed that the optimization of the state apparatus is not an end in itself. The main task is to improve the quality of public administration.

“However, the main requirements to the law enforcement and judicial systems remain the same. These include timely detection and suppression of antisocial behaviors, the highest respect for the rule of law, and the inadmissibility of bringing criminal or administrative charges against innocent persons,” the head of state noted.

The meeting is attended by more than two hundred and fifty participants, including top-ranking officials, heads of the government bodies, chairmen of the oblast executive committees and the Minsk City Hall, representatives of the Interior Ministry, the Investigation Committee, the Emergencies Ministry, the KGB, the State Border Committee, the State Customs Committee, the State Forensics Committee, prosecution authorities, the judiciary, and the Department of Financial Investigations.
