Lukashenko: Belarus has managed to become an island of stability in the region

BEIJING, 30 September (BelTA) – Belarus has managed to become an island of stability in the region. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the statement in his speech in the Peking University on 30 September, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian leader stated: “Due to the course of history for many centuries interests of major powers have been clashing in our lands in the center of Europe. A number of researchers describe it as the line where civilizations clash. Without aspiring to achieve global geopolitical ambitions we have managed to create an island of stability in our region by enabling friendly and rather trustful relations with all the neighbors: Russia, the European Union, and Ukraine.”

Alexander Lukashenko believes that the state of affairs is only natural for Belarus, which territory has been the crossroads where the West and the East, the North and the South literally meet each other since times immemorial.

According to the President, Belarus is a country, which foreign policy serves pragmatic and understandable goals. Raising living standards of the nation and ensuring security in the country and good neighborly relations at the borders are the most important goals.

“When the dangerous conflict in Ukraine started virtually at our borders — they are our closest brothers as well as Russians — in a certain sense Minsk turned out to be the ideal platform for negotiations for all the sides for the sake of resolving the crisis. Belarus' role, our sincere desire to act as a stabilizing factor have already been appreciated by many countries, who view our country as a support point for promoting their own interests, primarily economic ones, in the post-Soviet space and Eastern Europe,” noted the head of state.
