Call to speed up efforts for reducing number of decrepit houses in Belarus

MINSK, 3 October (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko ordered to accelerate the work on reducing the number of dilapidated houses in the country. The head of state made the relevant statement during the government conference held on 3 October to discuss the latest revision of the Housing Code and ways to improve the legislation on reducing the number of vacant and decrepit houses, BelTA has learned.

“As for the shabby and hazardous housing, my position is unilateral: we need order on the land. Such buildings should be removed and the lands should be back in use. This work should be accelerated and a legal document is needed to help governors and local authorities to bring order at the local level,” the president said.

If a person owns dwelling, it should be held in order, the president said.

According to Alexander Lukashenko, the mechanism of taking over vacant and decrepit houses, depending on their location and local conditions, should be improved. The head of state warned against the creation of various bureaucratic barriers here. “We need an unambiguous answer to this question. If the housing is abandoned, we allow the local authorities to demolish it, take the land back to use, sell it to a new owner, or use it for crops,” said the president.
