MINSK, 29 March (BelTA) - The Pentagon sees no military threats to Belarus, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Dr Michael Carpenter told reporters in Minsk on 29 March, BelTA has learned.
According to the Pentagon official, Belarus' Defense Ministry is better informed about the situation in the region. “We see no military threats to Belarus either from the East or from the West, in particular from NATO. We are building up our presence in Belarus' neighboring countries, but these actions are purely defensive,” Dr Michael Carpenter said.
He also commented on the information on the establishment of a Russian air base in Belarus that was actively discussed Belarusian mass media earlier. “Belarus is a sovereign state and can decide to build its own air base or host someone else's. But we and our allies would regard this as destabilization of the situation,” Dr Michael Carpenter said.
