Electoral process in Belarus' local elections viewed as transparent

MINSK, 23 February (BelTA) - Belarus has ensured a transparent electoral process and equal opportunities for all the candidates during the recent local elections. The matter was discussed at the meeting between Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Venezuela to Belarus Jose Boggiano Pericchi, BelTA learned from the Central Election Commission.

Representatives of the Venezuelan embassy took part in the observation of the elections as foreign observers. They visited polling stations both during the early voting and on the election day, talked to the candidates running for seats in the local councils and representatives of the public associations and political parties.

“During the monitoring the foreign observers found that all the necessary conditions were created to ensure transparency of the electoral process, equal opportunities for all the candidates, and also for the citizens of Belarus to exercise their right to vote,” the Central Election Commission noted.

Ambassador Jose Boggiano Pericchi congratulated the Belarusian CEC on the completion of the election campaign to the local councils of the 28th convocation.

The local elections were held in 18,111 constituencies of Belarus on 18 February 2018. A total of 18,110 deputies to the local councils were elected. The turnout made up 77.23%.
