MINSK, 6 June (BelTA) – It is necessary to put more efforts into developing high-technology spheres in order to ensure the economic security of the Union State of Belarus and Russia. The statement was made by Chairman of the International Affairs and National Security Commission of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Sergei Rakhmanov on 6 June, BelTA has learned.
An international conference on strategic security priorities of the Union State of Belarus and Russia is taking place at the Belarusian State University. Experts on security and international relations are busy discussing the key challenges to the economic and technological security of the two countries. The participation of Belarusian and Russian leaders in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Qingdao and China's role in Eurasian security are also on the agenda. Information security of the Union State of Belarus and Russia is one of the important items on the agenda.
According to Sergei Rakhmanov, the expert club intends to work out certain recommendations and proposals. “As far as economic security is concerned, we should primarily focus on innovations. It is necessary to develop additional avenues relating to high technologies in addition to what we already have in economy. If we don't do it, it will be difficult to accomplish what the country's leadership wants us to do. It is necessary to seriously take care of such things using the experience of other countries,” said the senator.
Economic security is a vital part of national, regional, and global security. “This is why we've gathered here today to sincerely discuss the problems that plague our relations. We know that we've secured rather good results in the social sphere of the Union State of Belarus and Russia. A high level of coordination has been achieved in politics, too. As for economy, it needs serious work. Naturally, all parties should be involved – the executive branch, the parliament, and the scientific community,” stressed Sergei Rakhmanov.
“There is no doubt that information security is also important. It is a serious problem on the international scale. In many aspects. Besides, there is a bunch of other aspects relating even to threats to the world view because the minds of our people are affected, including young ones. We see destructive influence of the Internet. This is why we should have sufficient resources in order to positively counteract it,” said the senator.
Speaking about the intellectual potential of the Union State of Belarus and Russia, Sergei Rakhmanov noted it is necessary to pool efforts. “We should work out proposals to find solutions, which will allow using the most powerful available intellectual potential for the development of our countries and prospects. We are working hard at the level of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus on analyzing the materials, which are published in the two countries. I can say that we have a lot of high-level experts with remarkable proposals, which do not get implemented for some reasons. This is why we should use mechanisms of the executive power, the parliament, the private sector, education and science, in order to unite efforts,” said Sergei Rakhmanov.
Director of the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences Aleksei Gromyko, Director of the Center for System Analysis and Strategic Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) Valery Goncharov, Head of the European Law Chair of the MGIMO Institute Mark Entin, and other experts from Belarus and Russia are also taking part in the conference.
