Belarus offers platform to advance CEI cooperation in IT

MINSK, 28 November (BelTA) – Belarus can act as a platform for cooperation of the CEI member states in the information technologies industry. Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich made the statement as he opened the session of the Central European Initiative Parliamentary Assembly in Minsk on 28 November, BelTA has learned.

Partners in the CEI have valuable experience in the sphere of digital technologies. “Belarus can also act as a platform for their cooperation in IT industry. The Minsk summit of the CEI parliamentarians represents a comfortable venue for such discussions. We have the experience and the relevant knowledge for it,” noted Mikhail Myasnikovich.

In 2017 according to evaluations of the International Telecommunication Union the development of information and communication technologies in Belarus was ranked 32nd among 175 countries. Belarus was ranked 49th out of 193 countries as far as readiness for digital government is concerned.

Apart from Belarus representatives of 12 countries, including Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Poland, Austria, Slovenia, and Ukraine are taking part in the Central European Initiative Parliamentary Assembly session. Representatives of the lower chamber of the Belarusian parliament, scientists, representatives of the real economy sector, including heads of leading innovative enterprises and high-tech enterprises, have been invited to attend the session.

Participants of the Central European Initiative Parliamentary Assembly session in Minsk are supposed to discuss digital technologies in terms of ensuring geopolitical security. The development of digital economy will be discussed taking into account information security, digital banking technologies, the adoption of organizational measures and other ones to support the development of IT products, unmanned driving, artificial intelligence, and biotechnologies.

Belarus assumed CEI presidency for the first time in 2017. Its presidency is focused on promoting compatibility in Greater Europe. The regional association comprises 18 countries. The main task of the Central European Initiative is to promote flexible and pragmatic European regional cooperation in order to prevent the emergence of new dividing lines in Europe.
