Belarus gearing up to relax visa requirements

MINSK, 2 June (BelTA) – Belarus is preparing a decree to ease the visa requirements, spokesperson for the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dmitry Mironchik told reporters on 2 June, BelTA has learned.

“We want to ease the visa requirements for those who want to come to Belarus. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with other public administration bodies is reviewing the text of the relevant decree of the head of state. Now we are working on the section of the document regarding illegal migrants to make sure they would not be able to take advantage of the new preferences,” he said.

According to him, the opening of the Belarusian border carries great migration risks for several countries as well as possible financial costs related to the deportation of illegals.

Moreover, the Belarusian agencies are compiling a clear and exhaustive list of countries whose citizens will be eligible for the new preferential regime, and are determining the terms of simplified travels. We are working on this document so thoroughly in order to make sure that the relaxed visa requirements would not hurt the stability and security of our country,” Dmitry Mironchik said.

Dmitry Mironchik noted that Belarus' main objective is to demonstrate openness, strengthen interpersonal and business contacts with other countries, to create the prerequisites for growth in the number of visits to the country and, accordingly, tourism-related earnings.
