Belarus, Egypt seek closer parliamentary contacts

MINSK, 16 January (BelTA) – Belarus and Egypt are interested in enhancing the contacts between the parliaments. The matter was discussed at a meeting between Chairman of the House of Representatives Vladimir Andreichenko and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Egypt to Russia with concurrent accreditation to Belarus Ihab Ahmed Talaat Nasr on 16 January, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Andreichenko emphasized the importance of inter-parliamentary contacts in developing bilateral relations. “We are interested and should do everything necessary to intensify the contacts between the parliaments of the two countries,” said the Chairman of the House of Representatives.

The speaker suggested organizing mutual visits, including between the heads of the parliaments. Vladimir Andreichenko expressed confidence that soon the parties would be able to sign an agreement on inter-parliamentary cooperation. He also supported the continuation of active cooperation at international parliamentary platforms. “This will promote trade and economic cooperation, and also cooperation in culture, education and tourism,” Vladimir Andreichenko said.

The MPs will do all the best to agree on concrete projects in various areas, the speaker added.

He took note of a high level of cooperation between Belarus and Egypt in the international arena where the two countries always support each other. For instance, Belarus has been a co-author of the Egyptian UN resolutions several times.

Belarus has been steadily developing its political, trade, economic and cultural contacts, including on the African continent. “We view Egypt as an important partner. We are interested in the development of our friendly relations,” Vladimir Andreichenko said. In his words, a number of important documents were signed during the official visit of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko to Egypt in January 2017.

The ambassador, for his part, stressed that the visit of the Belarusian leader gave a considerable impetus to the bilateral relations. The ambassador emphasized that the relations “can be named as very close”. The two countries have many areas to advance bilateral relations and the diplomat intends to make his contribution.
