MOSCOW, 11 May (BelTA) – Labeling products containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) with a special sign will become mandatory in the Eurasian Economic Union in a year and a half, BelTA learned from the press service of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC).
The EEC Board adopted the procedure to enact the changes to the EAEU technical regulation “Food products in part of their labeling”. “We have established a transitional period of 18 months. During this period manufacturers will be able to use genetically modified organisms in accordance with the previous technical regulation. During this period, producers shall apply the information on GMOs on consumer packaging. However, putting the sign “GMO” will remain optional for the time being,” the press service informed.
