MINSK, 26 December (BelTA) – Belarusian rower Yauheni Zalaty was named the Breakthrough of the Year 2024 at the National Olympic Committee Awards ceremony in Minsk on 25 December, BelTA learned.
Hockey player Aleksei Kolosov, trampolinist Viyaleta Bardzilouskaya and rower Yauheni Zalaty were nominated for the Breakthrough of the Year award. This year, Yauheni Zalaty, the native of Krasnopolye, won a silver medal at the Olympic Games in Paris in the men's single sculls, becoming the first male prize-winner in the history of Belarus in rowing. Last year, Zalaty clinched bronze at the 2024 World Rowing Cup II in Lucerne, Switzerland. In 2024, Yauheni Zalaty was awarded the Minsk Citizen of the Year title and the Order of Honor.
"The main event of the year was, certainly, the birth of my son. I was also very happy to win a medal at the Olympic Games, for which I have been working all my life. I am proud that my team and I achieved such results, that the whole country supported us," Yauheni Zalaty said. "I did not win in Paris. One person was stronger than me: German Oliver Zeidler. So I have a lot to do to beat him. There will be opportunities for this: the European Championships in May, the World Athletics Championships in September, and the World Cups. I wish Belarusians to remain united in the New Year. In this case we are invincible."
