WTA Finals: Sabalenka loses in quarterfinal

MINSK, 16 November (BelTA) – Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus lost to Greece's world number 6 Maria Sakkari, 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, the Chichen Itza group at the 2021 Akrona WTA Finals Guadalajara, Mexico, BelTA has learned.

At the start Aryna Sabalenka lost to world number 10 Paula Badosa of Spain, 4-6, 0-6. The Belarusian then defeated Poland's world number 9 Iga Swiatek, 7-5, 6-4.

Spain's Garbine Muguruza (5) beat No.8 seed Anett Kontaveit of Estonia 6-4, 6-4 in the final match in the Teotihuacan group. World number 4 Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic defeated world number three Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The first semifinal will feature two Spaniards Badosa and Muguruza, then Kontaveit will play Sakkari.

The winners of the semifinals will face each other on 17 November.

The total prize pool for the 2021 WTA final tournament will be $5 million.
