Vasily Kiriyenko 86th overall in Tour de France

MINSK, 29 July (BelTA) – Vasily Kiriyenko, the only Belarusian representing the British team Sky in the 2014 Tour de France, took the final 86th place in the many-day competitions, BelTA has learnt.

The Belarusian lost 3:30.23 to the winner, Italy's Vincenzo Nibali from Astana team (89:59.06), following the final stage 21 in one of the world's most prestigious competitions. Vasily Kiriyenko was 19th in the mountain stage. At first, the 33-year-old athlete was tasked with supporting Chris Froome, the Sky Team leader and the triumphant of the last year's Tour de France. Froome's fall and injury during stage 5 made the British team change the tactics. The stake was placed on Australia's Richie Porte but he failed to cope with the high tempo during the second week of the race and lost his chances to challenge for a place on the podium. Vasily Kiriyenko, however, was among the winners in a separate event. At stage 16th of the race the Belarusian finished third. This stage was the longest in Tour de France 2014 (237.5km) with its biggest part taking place in the mountains in the south of France.

Vasily Kiriyenko showed better performance this year making the distance of 3,656km to the finish.

Jean-Christophe Peraud from AG2R La Mondiale, France finished second (7.37 back), Thibaut Pinot from UCI ProTeam FDJ.fr. in third (8.15). Vincenzo Nibali became the sixth man to win all three Grand Tours - the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia (2013) and Vuelta a Espana (2010).

The main jersey winners included King of the Mountains Rafal Majka of Poland, young rider Thibaut Pinot, race winner Vincenzo Nibali and points winner Peter Sagan.
