Two medals for Belarus on 2021 European Athletics U20 Championships final day

MINSK, 19 July (BelTA) – Belarusian athletes won two medals on the final day of the 2021 European Athletics U20 Championships in Estonia, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Athletics Federation.

Matvei Volkov won silver in the Pole Vault with his best attempt of 5.44m. The event was won by Anthony Ammirati of France (5.64m). Bronze went to Ukraine's Oleksandr Onufriyev (5.44m).

The Belarusian pole-vaulter commented on his result: “In June I hurt my heel, so I was not in 100 percent shape. But I had a couple of really good tries. So if everything goes well, I can think about trying to clear 5.75m. The conditions in Tallinn were good. I really like the city. It was a little bit windy. I want to win a gold medal, so Nairobi is my next big goal. I don't know if I'm happy about this medal or not, because I still have a feeling that I could have done better.”

Belarus' Uladzislau Puchko won the Men's Discus Throw bronze with his attempt of 61.06m. Mykolas Alekna, the son of two-time Olympic champion Virgilijus Alekna, won the event with a great advantage (68.00m). Silver went to Magnus Zimmermann from Germany (61.55m). Belarus' Raman Khartanovich placed fourth with 58.74m.

Team Belarus won five medals at the championships in Tallinn. Earlier, Ilya Misouski took silver in the Men's Shot Put, Alina Nikitsenka collected bronze in the Women's Discus Throw) and Maryola Bukel secured bronze in the Women's Hammer Throw.
