MINSK, 13 May (BelTA) - 30% of quota places remain to be allocated before the start of the 32nd Olympic Games in Tokyo. The information has been posted on the official website of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) following the meeting of the IOC Executive Board, BelTA learned from the press service of the National Olympic Committee of Belarus.
According to the official website, the share of allocated quota places reached 70%, or over 7,800 athletes as of 12 May 2021. “Qualification in many sports and disciplines has already completed. Of the total quota places for the Games, 20% remain to be allocated via rankings and only 10% via qualification events taking place by the deadline of 29 June,” the IOC said.
As of 12 May the Belarusian national team secured 86 Olympic berths.
According to the IOC, its efforts, together with the organizing committee, are entirely focused on the implementation of the final stage of preparations for the Games. It was emphasized that the Olympics in the Japanese capital would unite the world and become a significant event.
The Executive Board also discussed the coronavirus vaccination during the Games. The IOC is working hard to help as many athletes as possible to undergo the vaccination. It is expected that the vast majority of those who will be staying at the Olympic Village will be vaccinated, said IOC Director for Communications Mark Adams.
The IOC has reportedly reached an agreement with a major U.S.-German corporation to provide coronavirus vaccine to athletes who will compete at the Tokyo Olympics.
The IOC expects that a significant part of the Games participants will be vaccinated before arriving in Japan.
The 32nd Olympic Games were rescheduled from 2020 to 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Games will be held from 23 July to 8 August in Tokyo.
