MINSK, 10 February (BelTA) – Athletes who will be taking part in the Tokyo Olympic Games will be tested for COVID-19 at least once every four days, TASS reported citing the Playbook published by the International Olympic Committee.
The timing and frequency of testing will depend on sport and competition schedule. The tests will be carried out at the dedicated facility inside the Olympic and Paralympic Village. If athletes stay in non-official accommodation, they will need to use a dedicated vehicle in order to be tested. It will be possible to track test results through a special smartphone application.
If a positive test for COVID-19 is confirmed, athletes will be informed immediately through another app developed to track those the infected have had close contact with. The app does not contain personal data and just warns of potential risks. The app has been in use in Japan since last summer and is mandatory for those attending the Tokyo Olympics.
The Olympic Games in Tokyo were to take place on 24 July-9 August 2020. Due to the pandemic the games have been rescheduled for a year and are set to be held on 23 July-8 August 2021. The Paralympic Games are scheduled to take place on 24 August-5 September.
