Staiki to host World Masters Sambo Championships

MINSK, 11 November (BelTA) - The National Olympic Training Center Staiki in Belarus will play host to the World Masters Sambo Championships in 19-22 November, BelTA learned from the press service of the athletes association “We Come From Sambo”.

Medal events will be held in the following age categories: 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-65, 65-70 and 70+. Weight categories are 62, 68, 74, 82, 90, 100, 100+kg.

The program also include various events and clinics from world sambo legendary athletes. 14-time entry in the Guinness Book of World Records Mikhail Surikov of Vologda plans to set new world records.

“As few such events are held worldwide today, we will do our best to make sure that the guests and participants get the best and brightest impressions from the tournament, from its program and, of course, from the traditional Belarusian hospitality,” said Vladimir Yaprintsev, a member of the executive committee of the International Sambo Federation (FIAS), the head of the athletes' association “We Come From Sambo”, Honored Master of Sports of the USSR and multiple world sambo champion.

The organizers of the tournament are the International Sambo Federation (FIAS), the Sports and Tourism Ministry of Belarus, the athletes' association “We Come From Sambo” with the support of the Union State Standing Committee.

Earlier, the International Sambo Federation had reported the cancellation of several major tournaments scheduled for 2020. Among them was the World Masters Sambo Championships, which was originally scheduled to take place in the Netherlands in October. This decision was revised later.
