Smolski clinches sprint win as 2024/25 Commonwealth Biathlon Cup season kicks off

MINSK, 6 September (BelTA) – Anton Smolski of Belarus kicked off the new 2024/25 Commonwealth Biathlon Cup season with a victory in the Men’s 10km Sprint, BelTA has learned.

The event features the best Belarusian and Russian biathletes.

The opening leg of the tournament is taking place in the format of summer biathlon in Russia’s Krasnoyarsk. The Men’s 10km Sprint featured 62 athletes. Anton Smolski, the Team Belarus leader and the reigning Commonwealth Biathlon Cup champion, was seventh following the first shooting stage, with one penalty. 
 
The Belarusian showed perfect skiing skills on the track and took control of the competition after cleaning the second standing stage to go unchallenged to the victory. Second-place Petr Pashchenko finished 23 seconds behind. Roman Yeremin crossed the finish line third. 
 
Eight Belarusian athletes took part in the race, with clean-shooting Stsiapan Danilau finishing fourth, six seconds behind the bronze medalist. Maksim Varabei came in 17th, Ivan Tulatsin – 20th, Dzmitry Lazouski – 22nd, Ilya Auseyenka – 30th, Pavel Belko – 39th, Mikita Labastau – 50th.

The program will continue with the Men’s and Women’s Pursuits on Saturday and two mass starts on Sunday.
