MINSK, 21 January (BelTA) - Two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus fought through World No.32 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, to reach her third consecutive Australian Open semifinal, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian will next face Spain’s world number 12 Paula Badosa that outplayed World No.3 Coco Gauff of the United States, 7-5, 6-4.
Aryna Sabalenka leads 5-2 in head-to-head against Paula Badosa. En route to the current Australian Open semifinal Aryna Sabalenka defeated World No.81 Sloane Stephens of the United States, Spain’s World No.54 Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, World No.42 Clara Tauson of Denmark, and Russia’s world number 15 Mirra Andreeva. Aryna Sabalenka won the Australian Open in 2023 and 2024.
Two other Australian Open quarterfinals will take place on 22 January. World number two Iga Swiatek of Poland will face World No.8 Emma Navarro of the United States, and World No.14 Madison Keys of the United States will take on Ukraine’s World No.27 Elina Svitolina.
In the men’s event Germany’s world number two Alexander Zverev reached the semifinal defeating World No.11 Tommy Paul of the United States. World No.7 Novak Djokovic of Serbia is set to play Spain’s World No.3 Carlos Alcaraz. Italy’s world number one Jannik Sinner will face World No.8 Alex de Minaur of Australia, and Italy’s world number 55 Lorenzo Sonego will take pn world number 20 Ben Shelton of the United States.
The first Grand Slam tournament of the year will be over on 26 January.
