MINSK, 25 April (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number one Aryna Sabalenka defeated Russia’s Anna Blinkova, 6-3, 6-4, to reach the Madrid Open round three, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian will next face either Belgium’s world number 26 Elise Mertens or Colombia’s world number 51 Camila Osorio. Aryna Sabalenka won the event in 2021 and 2023. Last year she lost to Poland’s Iga Swiatek in the final.
In the doubles opener Victoria Azarenka of Belarus and Ashlyn Krueger of the United States defeated Demi Schuurs of the Netherlands and Asia Muhammad of the United States, 6-4, 6-4. In the second round Victoria Azarenka and Ashlyn Krueger will face Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova and Peyton Stearns of the United States. In the singles opening round Victoria Azarenka lost to Serbia’s Olga Danilovic, 4-6, 2-6.
