Sabalenka, Mertens advance into Ostrava Open quarterfinal

MINSK, 21 October (BelTA) – Belarus' Aryna Sabalenka and Belgium's Elise Mertens went off to a good start at the 2020 Ostrava Open on 20 October, BelTA has learned.

In the round of Last 16 the Belarusian-Belgian duo solved the Slovakian-Czech duet of Chantal Skamlova and Jesika Maleckova 5-7, 6-1, 10-5. In the quarterfinal Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens will face the Latvian-Russian tandem of Jelena Ostapenko and Vera Zvonareva who earlier defeated Belarus' Victoria Azarenka and Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic.

In the women's singles round of Last 16 Belarus' world number 14 Victoria Azarenka will play world number 85 Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic. Belarus' world number 12 Aryna Sabalenka will face U.S. world number 55 Coco Gauff.

In the men's singles round of Last 32 in Cologne Belarus' world number 87 Egor Gerasimov cruised part Germany's world number 124 Daniel Altmaier 6-1, 6-0. The Belarusian will face Canada's world number 22 Felix Auger Aliassime for a spot in the quarterfinal.

At the Challenger tournament in Istanbul Belarus' world number 129 Ilya Ivashka defeated Turkey's world number 503 Ergi Kirkin 6-2, 6-4. The Belarusian will next play either France's world number 219 Elliot Benchetrit or Turkey's world number 215 Cem Ilkel.

In the doubles opener Ilya Ivashka and Portugal's Frederico Ferreira Silva will play the New Zealand-Sweden tandem of Artem Sitak and Andre Goransson.
