Sabalenka loses to Garcia in WTA Finals

MINSK, 8 November (BelTA) – Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus lost in the final match of the WTA Finals tournament in Fort Worth, BelTA has learned.

Belarus' world number seven lost to world number 6 Caroline Garcia of France 6-7 (4-7), 4-6 in the final. The match lasted for an hour and 40 minutes. Earlier, only Victoria Azarenka out of all Belarusian players reached the WTA Finals deciding match – she lost to Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic in 2011.

Aryna Sabalenka defeated world number one Iga Swiatek of Poland in the semifinal. In the round-robin stage she saw off world number 2 Ons Jabeur of Tunisia and world number 3 Jessica Pegula of the United States. She lost to world number 5 Maria Sakkari of Greece. For the 24-year-old Aryna Sabalenka it was her second WTA Finals. She fell in the round-robin stage in 2021. apart from the deciding match in Fort Worth Aryna Sabalenka played in the WTA tournament finals twice and lost both of them. She lost to Iga Swiatek In Stuttgart in April and to Ekaterina Alexandrova in 's-Hertogenbosch in June.

In the doubles final the Czech tandem Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova lost to Belgium's Elise Mertens and Russia's Veronika Kudermetova 2-6, 6-4, 9-11. The total prize money for the 2022 WTA Finals was $5 million.
