Sabalenka into Brisbane semifinal

MINSK, 3 January (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number one Aryna Sabalenka progressed to the Brisbane International semifinal, defeating world number 44 Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 6-4, in an hour and 45 minutes, BelTA has learned.

In the third round Marie Bouzkova defeated Belarus’ world number 20 Victoria Azarenka, 6-4, 6-4. In the second round Aryna Sabalenka saw off Mexico’s world number 75 Renata Zarazua, 6-4, 6-0, and then saw off world number 29 Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.

In the semifinal the Belarusian will face Russia’s world number 16 Mirra Andreeva. The Russian player defeated world number 42 Ons Jabeur of Tunisia. Ukraine’s world number 55 Angelina Kalinina and Russia’s world number 107 Polina Kudermetova also made it into the semifinal.

Last year Aryna Sabalenka reached the Brisbane final where she lost to Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, 0-6, 3-6. Victoria Azarenka reached the semifinal where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka, 2-6, 4-6. The ongoing event will be over on 5 January.

Brisbane International is held before the first Grand Slam tournament of the season, the Australian Open, which will take place in Melbourne on 12-26 January. Aryna Sabalenka won the two previous Australian Open editions. Victoria Azarenka won it in 2012 and 2013.
