MINSK, 18 April (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number two Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the Stuttgart Open quarterfinal, moving past an injured Paula Badosa 7-6(4), 4-6, 3-3 ret. after the Spanish world number 93 retired from their match due to a left thigh injury, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian will next play either world number eight Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic or Russia’s world number 36 Anastasia Potapova. Aryna Sabalenka was the finalist of the three previous editions.
Reigning champion, world number one Iga Swiatek of Poland will face Belgium’s world number 30 Elise Mertens in the round of Last 16. Iga Swiatek beat Aryna Sabalenka in the previous two events.
The ongoing event in Stuttgart will be over on 21 April.
