Degtyarev: Belarus, Russia strive to return fully to international sport

MINSK, 16 February (BelTA) - Belarus and Russia will be making every effort to return to the international sports community in full capacity, Russian Minister of Sports, Head of the Russian Olympic Committee Mikhail Degtyarev told the media after the joint board meeting of the sports ministries of Belarus and Russia in Minsk on 16 February, BelTA learned.

“We are not going to self-isolate. We want to return to the world stage as soon as possible,” Mikhail Degtyarev emphasized.

Belarusian Sport and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk noted a certain warming on the part of international sports structures. This, in particular, is evidenced by the recognition by the International Olympic Committee of the results of the Belarusian NOC General Assembly where Viktor Lukashenko was re-elected head of the National Olympic Committee. “Currently, Belarusians are allowed to compete internationally in more than 30 sports, we hope that more will follow,” Sergei Kovalchuk said.

As for the Summer Cup of Best Athletes of Belarus and Russia, the competitions will be held in 15 sports, including in athletics, rowing, weightlifting, canoeing, swimming and others. Seven tournaments will be held in Russia and Belarus each, and one sambo tournament will be held jointly.

The summer competitions will be open. Representatives of other countries can take part in them as well.
Mikhail Degtyarev also said that in 2025 about 4,500 Russian athletes plan to come to Belarus for competitions in 30 sports. In 2024, Belarusian and Russian athletes met in Russia 287 times. Joint competitions were held in 26 summer and 7 winter sports.

Following the board meeting, the parties signed the documents on further cooperation and approved the calendar of competitions involving Belarusian and Russian athletes.
