Bronze for Belarus at 2024 European Wrestling Championships

MINSK, 15 February (BelTA) - Belarusian athletes are taking part as neutrals in the 2024 European Wrestling Championships which have kicked off in Bucharest, Romania, BelTA has learned.

In the Greco-Roman Wrestling event Abubakar Khaslakhanau of Belarus claimed the 97kg bronze. The Belarusian beat Aleksandar Stjepanevic of Sweden and Anton Vieweg of Germany, but lost to Armenia’s Artur Alesanyan. In the bronze medal bout Abubakar Khaslakhanau defeated Beytullah Kayisdag of Turkiye 8-0. 

Abubakar Khaslakhanau secured a victory at 2023 World Junior Wrestling Championships (U20) and clinched gold at the Second CIS Games. At the senior world event the Belarusian wrestler placed fifth to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Abubakar Khaslakhanau’s bronze became the second medal for Team Belarus at the 2024 European Wrestling Championships. Earlier, Kiryl Maskevich claimed bronze in the Greco-Roman 87kg.

The women’s wrestling medal events will be held on 15-16 February. The freestyle medal events are scheduled for 17-18 February.

Over 500 athletes from 38 countries are competing for medals at the 2024 European Wrestling Championships.
