MINSK, 30 January (BelTA) - The Belarusian national bandy team have lost to Sweden in the quarterfinal match of the 2014 Bandy World Championship which is underway in Russia's Irkutsk, BelTA has learnt.
In the 30 January quarterfinal Belarus did not have any chance of getting something from the match against Sweden and lost 5:33 (2:16). Belarus' Sergei Chernetsky scored three goals while Alexander Kozlov added two more.
Belarus won only one game at the 2014 Bandy World Championship after overpowering Canada 8:3 in the Division A group stage match. Belarus also suffered defeats in the group stage at the hands of the U.S. (4:7) and Norway (1:23). Belarus will now compete for places from 5th to 8th and again meet the United States on 1 February. The U.S. lost to Kazakhstan 3:11 in the quarterfinal, while Finland won against Norway 9:2.
In the other match to decide on 5-8th places Norway will meet the loser of the Russia vs. Norway quarterfinal match due on 30 January.
In the 2014 Bandy World Championship semifinals Sweden will take on Kazakhstan while Finland will face the winner of the Russia vs. Norway tie. The final of the 34th edition of the tournament will take place on 2 February, while the losers of the semifinals will compete for third place.
