Belarus, Uzbekistan to help each other train athletes

TASHKENT, 8 February (BelTA) – Belarus and Uzbekistan will help each other train athletes, Belarus’ Sports and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk told reporters, BelTA has learned.

Following the talks between the presidents of Belarus and Uzbekistan in Tashkent, several documents on sports and tourism were signed, including a cooperation program between the sports ministries and an action plan to promote cooperation in tourism for 2024-2025.

“First of all, we will focus on winter sports. We excel in biathlon, ice hockey, freestyle (we are traditionally one of Europe’s strongest teams).

“Therefore, Uzbekistan asked us to assist them with the training of athletes in these sports. In turn, we are interested in assistance in sports that are traditionally well-developed in Uzbekistan: boxing, taekwondo, martial arts. Such collaboration, I think, will lead to even better results in the international arena," Sergei Kovalchuk said.

According to him, there are great prospects for cooperation in sports education. The mutual tourist flow between the countries is also growing. "Last year alone, the number of Belarusian visitors to Uzbekistan has tripled," the minister said.
