MINSK, 5 November (BelTA) – Chizhovka Arena has hosted the opening of the traditional Presidential Sports Club Cup, an international hockey tournament featuring junior national teams from three countries, BelTA has learned.
In the tournament opener, the Belarusian and Kazakh U18 national teams took to the ice. It was the hosts’ forward Saveli Kovalets who scored the first goal of the competition, finding the net on a power play five minutes into the game. Kovalets struck again midway through the first, followed by Roman Laman adding to the Belarusian lead late in the second period. The Belarusians sealed the commanding win in the final stretch: Laman scored his second, and Nader Frolov iced the game. Belarus U18 team sealed a 5:0 victory, courtesy of a shutout by the home team’s netminder Maxim Ragoisha.
A match between the Belarusian U17 youth team and the Russian U16 national team at 6 p.m. will wrap up the 5 November schedule. The main event of the Presidential Sports Club Cup resumes on November 7-8, with a 3x3 tournament to decide the medalists on 6 November. Russian players are the defending champions of the Presidential Sports Club Cup, a tournament running since 2007 that Belarus has won on six occasions.
