MINSK, 8 November (BelTA) – The Belarusian U17 junior team finished third at the traditional international ice hockey tournament, the Presidential Sports Club Cup, BelTA has learned.
The battle for third place at Chizhovka Arena pitted our juniors against the Kazakhstan U18 national team. Both sides came into the match after losses to the Belarus U18 and Russia U16 teams. In Saturday’s encounter, the Kazakhs went ahead on three separate occasions, but each time the team led by Yaroslav Chupris fought back to level the score, thanks to goals from Alexei Tabolin, Artur Zhuk, and Kirill Ivanov.
Near the end of the third period, the Belarusians finally grabbed the lead with a goal from Nikita Karpeyev, only for the guests to tie the game with just 25 seconds remaining. The game went to overtime, where Ivanov netted the winning goal for the home team, sealing a 5-4 victory. Thus, the Belarusian junior team won the bronze medals of the Presidential Sports Club Cup, while the Kazakh junior team finished fourth.
The Belarus U18 and Russia U16 teams will face off for the international tournament’s main trophy, with the match beginning at 14:30. Russian players are the defending champions of the Presidential Sports Club Cup, a tournament running since 2007 that Belarus has won on six occasions.
