Belarus' rhythmic gymnast Melitina Staniouta retires

MINSK, 22 December (BelTA) – Melitina Staniouta of Belarus has announced her retirement from rhythmic gymnastics. A farewell ceremony will take place as part of the annual children's rhythmic gymnastics tournament Baby Cup at Minsk Palace of Sports on 23 December.

Melitina Staniouta will perform her exhibition routine. Speaking about the retirement, the 23-year-old athlete said that it was a hard decision for her to make. She started thinking about ending her career after the 2016 Rio Games where she placed 5th overall.

Melitina Staniouta started her professional sports career in 2005. She graced the podium of many world and European championships, won the World Cup legs, Universiade and the World Games. In 2015 Melitina Staniouta was named Honored Master of Sports. Melitina is the great-granddaughter of famous Belarusian (Soviet Union) actress Stefaniya Staniouta.
