MINSK, 14 February (BelTA) - President of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Belarus Viktor Lukashenko has sent birthday greetings to honorary president of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Vitaly Smirnov as the specialist turned 90, BelTA learned from the press service of the NOC of Belarus.
The head of the NOC of Belarus noted that for many decades Vitaly Smirnov was one of the leaders of the world Olympic movement and made a huge contribution to the development of sports both in the post-Soviet space and in the world, and also to strengthening international cooperation. “You are remembered as a wise leader, experienced mentor, who was at the forefront of the Olympic movement for more than 40 years, inspiring millions of people around the world with your ideas and initiatives. The high title of Hero of Labor, which was awarded ahead of the anniversary, is a testimony of selflessness and dedication,” the message of greetings reads. Viktor Lukashenko wished Vitaly Smirnov a long life surrounded by the care and warmth of his family.
Vitaly Smirnov was a member of the International Olympic Committee from 1971 to 2015. Until 2001, he headed the Russian Olympic Committee, and then became its honorary president. Vitaly Smirnov is a holder of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, numerous orders, medals, badges of honor of different countries and the IOC.
