Belarus names squad for 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships

MINSK, 14 August (BelTA) – Belarus has named its team for the AIBA World Boxing Championships which is due in Yekaterinburg, Russia on 7-21 September, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Boxing Federation.

Competing for Belarus will be Nikolai Shakh (57kg), Vazgen Safaryants (63kg), Evgeny Dolgolevets (69kg), Vitaly Bondarenko (75kg), and Mikhail Dolgolevets (81kg).

Russia will host the World Boxing Championships for the first time since 1989. Then, the tournament took place in Moscow. This time, Yekaterinburg is expected to welcome almost 500 athletes from 89 countries. The 2019 edition of the AIBA World Boxing Championships has been deprived of the status of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics qualifier. Because of the disagreements between the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Boxing Federation (AIBA), the 2020 Olympics qualification is monitored by the IOC. According to a new format Olympic qualifiers will be held at continental competitions that will be running from January to May 2020.
