Belarus eyes BRICS Games medals

MINSK, 5 June (BelTA) - Belarusian athletes have their eye on the medals of the upcoming BRICS Games in Kazan, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Sport and Tourism Ministry.

The Belarusian sport delegation comprises about 620 people (including judges, managers, representatives of federations). There will be about 400 athletes, with the most numerous teams in athletics (81 athletes), canoe sprint (34) and rowing (30). The BRICS Games program will feature competitions in 27 sports, and Belarusians will not compete only in the acrobatic rock 'n' roll tournament. The organizers have invited athletes from more than 60 countries. About 5,000 athletes will compete in 392 medal events.

For all Belarusian athletes, the Games in Kazan will be one of the most important competitions this year. Therefore, the Belarusian delegation included almost all the best athletes. Taking into account the upcoming Olympic Games 2024, some Belarusian Olympic qualifiers will not take part in the BRICS Games.

Nevertheless, there will be a lot of famous Belarusian athletes competing in Kazan. These are track and field athletes Elvira Hrabarenka, Iryna Zhuk, Tatsiana Khaladovich, Aliaksei Katkavets, Matvei Volkov. Due to the decision of international organizations, our track and field athletes are banned from the Paris Olympics. Nevertheless, it is great that they will be able to show their best at such a large-scale sport forum as the BRICS Games. Competing in Kazan will also be Vasilina Khandoshka, bronze medalist of the 2024 World Synchronized Swimming Championships, Darya Naumava, silver medalist of the 2016 Olympics in weightlifting, world sambo champion Daniela Zhdan and her teammate Anzhela Zhylinskaya, silver medalist of the world championships.

The BRICS Games will be held in Kazan from 12-23 June.
