Belarus edge Russia in EYOF opener

MINSK, 15 December (BelTA) – The Belarusian national ice hockey team secured a narrow win, 2-1, over Russia in the opener of the 2022 European Youth Olympic Festival in Finland, BelTA has learned.

The game was really tight. The first goal was scored by Belarus' Matvei Morshchenok in the 31st minute of the match. Russia tied the game during the third period. The match went into overtime.

Only less than a minute before the end of overtime, Belarus' Nikolai Tishkevich managed to breakaway from Russians and scored the winning goal.

Belarus will next play against Finland on 15 December.

The European Youth Winter Olympic Festival was due in February 2021, but was postponed more than a year because of the coronavirus pandemic. The boys ice hockey tournament was decided to hold during the December international break.
