Belarus beat Latvia at 2021 IIHF U18 World Championship

MINSK, 30 April (BelTA) – Belarus defeated Latvia 6-2 at the 2021 Ice Hockey U18 World Championship in the United States, BelTA has learned.

Fyodor Nikolayenya opened the scoring three minutes into the first period after some good pressure in the Latvian end.

Early in the middle stanza Belarus scored two more through Danila Klimovich and Yegor Klavdiev. Then, Latvia got on the board on a power play. Danila Klimovich scored his second of the night late in the second period.

Ilya Morozov put the game out of reach with a fifth goal at 9:54 of the final period. Belarus closed out its scoring with an empty netter with 2:41 remaining. Rainers Darzins got one back for Latvia with less than two minutes remaining.

The Group A standings are as follows: Canada – 6 points (two games played), Belarus – 6 points (3), Sweden – 6 (3), Switzerland – 3 (3), Latvia – 0 (3).

Belarus have already secured a quarterfinal spot regardless the outcome of the game against Canada scheduled for 2 May.
