
MINSK, 6 October (BelTA) – Belarusian athletes have won over a dozen medals in canoe sprint at the 3rd CIS Games in Azerbaijan, BelTA has learned.
Six events were held at the rowing canal in Mingachevir on Monday, 6 October. In the men’s U20 K1 1000m event, Belarus’ Ilya Filimonau clocked the best result. Artsiom Vaitseshyn claimed victory in the same event among U16 athletes. This came after both Belarusians had won gold in the 500m races the previous day, 5 October.
Another gold was claimed by Heorhi Varazhun and Emil Abalmasau (U18) in the K2 500m. With this win, Emil Abalmasau became a three-time champion at the 3rd CIS Games, and Heorhi Varazhun added to his silver medal from the earlier K1 race. Ivan Badytschyk and Artsiom Vaitseshyn (U16, K2 500m) added another gold to the team’s haul. This comes after the team had claimed five gold and one bronze medal the previous day, bringing the overall medal count for Belarus in canoe sprint to 11 (9 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze).
The 3rd CIS Games are underway in Azerbaijan spanning seven cities: Ganja, Yevlakh, Mingachevir, Gabala, Shaki, Goygol, and Khankendi. The international event has brought together over 1,600 athletes under the age of 23 from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Türkiye, Cuba, Kuwait, Pakistan, and Oman. The Belarusian delegation includes 241 athletes competing in 21 sport disciplines. The closing ceremony is scheduled for 8 October.
