Azarenka to open 2025 Indian Wells against U.S. Clervie Ngounoue

MINSK, 5 March (BelTA) – Victoria Azarenka of Belarus will kick off her 2025 Indian Wells campaign against Clervie Ngounoue of the United States, BelTA has learned.

In the qualifying final the 18-year-old American defeated Sonay Kartal of the UK, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5. The winner in the Azarenka-Ngounoue match will face Qinwen Zheng of China in the round of Last 64. 

Victoria Azarenka was the event in 2009, 2011, 2016. 

Current world number one Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus will launch her run from round two. She will face either McCartney Kessler of the United States or Anna Blinkova of Russia. In 2023 Aryna Sabalenka reached the Indian Wells final where she lost to Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina. 

The previous edition was won by Iga Swiatek of Poland. This year’s edition will be over on 16 March. The winner will earn $1.2 million and 1,000 points.
